WASA and DPW Help Make the Season Bright for Some DC Families

December 10, 2007

Just in time for the holidays, the D.C. Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) and the D.C. Department of Public Works (DPW) are teaming up to provide gifts and donations for District families affected by HIV/AIDS. The two agencies are joining forces for the 6th Annual Bread for the Soul toy and food drive.

“For the past five years, Bread for the Soul has been a designated community service activity for WASA, and our employees generously donate their time and money to make this event a success,” WASA General Manager Jerry N. Johnson said. “By participating in the annual charity drive, WASA employees are providing some joy and relief to many District families impacted by HIV and AIDS.”

From now through December 20, 2007, WASA and DPW employees are collecting toys and cash donations. Collections bins for the toys and books have been placed in designated locations at all WASA and DPW facilities. All food baskets and gifts will be delivered to the families on Saturday, December 22, 2007.

“DPW employees are truly caring and big-hearted all year round and during this season of giving we want to continue our tradition of giving,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. “Bread for the Soul has provided thousands of gifts for some of the District’s most vulnerable citizens for more than 15 years and I am proud that DPW can be a part of that legacy.”

Last year, WASA and DPW employees donated $3,532 and hundreds of toys and books. Through their combined efforts, 76 families received food baskets and 142 children were provided with gifts.

Bread for the Soul is a 17-year-old local nonprofit organization that delivers food baskets, books, toys and cash donations to families affected by HIV and AIDS during the holiday season.

If you would like to make a donation, please contact WASA’s Office of Public Affairs at (202) 787-2200 or DPW’s Office of the Director at (202) 673-6812.
