Open Data Portal

Good data tells a story and informs our decision making. It can also remove some of the mystery about the work we do on behalf of our customers. Here on our Open Data Portal, we invite you to explore the numbers that drive our operations. Go inside our meter replacement project, pinpoint where water main breaks occur, or see which fire hydrants are out of service. If you have any questions about the Portal, please call External Affairs at 202-787-2200 or email externalaffairs@dcwater.com.

Our capital improvement plan is measured in the billions. That's the level of investment required to upgrade our water and sewer systems, comply with federal mandates to reduce nutrient discharges and combined sewer overflows to local rivers, and improve the efficiency of our operations. This work is occurring across the city, and by clicking on the blue points shown on map below you can see what's happening in your neighborhood. Please note the field project extent describes the length of project in miles (not all projects contain project extent). For more information please visit https://www.dcwater.com/projects

DC Water Breaks Ground on Piney Branch Tunnel, Final Phase of DC Clean Rivers Project

Today, DC Water broke ground on the Piney Branch Tunnel, the final major tunnel in our Clean Rivers Project. This work will help keep sewage and trash out of local waterways and make Rock Creek, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay cleaner for our community.

When we finish the Piney Branch Tunnel, it will hold at least 4.2 million gallons of rainwater and wastewater during heavy storms. Instead of overflowing into Piney Branch, that water will go to the Blue Plains Water Resource Recovery Facility, where it will be treated.
