*MEDIA ADVISORY* - DC Water to announce Green Infrastructure Challenge winners, unveil innovative projects to green District neighborhoods

January 02, 2014

The Green Infrastructure Challenge engaged the design community to devise innovative and practical green infrastructure solutions for the District. A total of more than $1 million will be awarded for this initiative as part of the DC Clean Rivers Project.

Green infrastructure (GI) is a natural way to manage stormwater, by absorbing rain before it makes its way to the sewer or stormwater system. Examples include green roofs, bioretention, rain barrels and pervious pavement. Keeping stormwater out of the sewer system can go a long way to improving the health of our local waterways, since it contributes to combined sewer overflows (CSOs) in heavy rain storms.

Visuals include presentation of awards, speakers and illustrative boards of innovative landscape, streetscape and building designs.

Trench boxes at construction site for new pit accessing Potomac Interceptor Upstream

DC Water and its contractors continue to make progress constructing new access points to the Potomac Interceptor, one upstream of the damaged section, and an additional entry downstream to divert more wastewater flow from the pipe. These access points will allow crews to install a bulkhead, blocking flow in the pipe upstream of the collapsed area, keeping the site as dry as possible so crews can safely remove an extensive rock dam currently blocking the pipe.
