Traffic Advisory - Travel lanes reduced on Mount Olivet Road NE

(Washington, DC) – In association with the Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project, DC Water's contractor will begin instrument installation on Mount Olivet Road NE. The construction schedule has changed and this work will begin on or about the week of August 17, 2020. The instrument installation work will take approximately three weeks to complete and the work hours are from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. 

Travel and Parking Restrictions
•    Travel lanes will be reduced to one lane in each direction around the median area installation work on Mount Olivet Road between West Virginia Avenue NE and Capitol Avenue NE. 
•    Parking on Capitol Avenue NE will be restricted. 
 

Detour Routes
Left turns from Mount Olivet Road to West Virginia Avenue will not be permitted during construction. Detour signs will be posted to direct traffic to use alternate routes. 
•    Motorists are encouraged to use Florida Avenue NE and New York Avenue NE to access West Virginia Avenue. 
 

Bus Stop Relocations
Three bus stops on Mount Olivet Road will be temporarily relocated. See the map for details.
•    Bus stop #1001476, D4 and D8, located on westbound Mount Olivet Road near Montello Avenue NE (in front of Valero’s gas station) will be moved eastward just past Montello Avenue.
•    Bus stop #1001504, D8, located on westbound Mount Olivet Road near Corcoran Street NE (in front of Bethesda Baptist Church) will be moved across Corcoran Street. 
•    Bus stop #1001501, D8, located on eastbound Mount Olivet Road near Capitol Avenue will be moved near the Corcoran Street intersection. 
 

After the instrumentation installation work is complete, the contractor will extend the new Mount Olivet Road Diversion Construction Site onto Mount Olivet Road NE. The new construction site is located on Mount Olivet Road between West Virginia Avenue NE and Capitol Avenue NE in the Bethesda Baptist Church parking lot. Crews have begun preparing the site for construction. Construction work at this location is expected to take approximately two years to complete.

Travel Restrictions 
•    Travel lanes on Mount Olivet Road will be reduced to one in each direction past the construction site.

Pedestrian Detour 
•    While the sidewalk in front of the construction site will be closed, pedestrians may follow the detour path through the park. There will be two high-visibility crosswalks on Capitol Avenue NE and Kendall Street NE. 
 

Additional Information 
•    People who live or work near the affected locations will notice additional construction equipment and personnel as well as noise associated with construction activities.
•    Commuters and pedestrians will notice road signs and/or flagging personnel directing them around the work site.
•    Pedestrians will notice signage for the closed sidewalk restricting access.

Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project Details
The Northeast Boundary Tunnel is the largest component of the Clean Rivers Project. It begins south of RFK Stadium and will extend north to Rhode Island Avenue NE and west to 6th Street NW. When complete, the approximately five-mile long tunnel will significantly reduce chronic flooding in areas it serves as well as significantly reduce combined sewer overflow to the Anacostia River.
