The contractor will perform detailed steps throughout the installation process, which will help to promote timely and accurate billing for all customers.  To prevent signal loss, please do not obstruct the meter lid with flower pots, mulch or other large objects.  If you have concerns about your bill, please contact our Customer Service Department at (202) 354-3600 for assistance.

No. Flowers/shrubs should not be located on top of the meter pit.

We will aim for minimal disruption of landscaping. Upon completion of the work, minor site restoration (re-grading soil, mulch or similar to preexisting conditions) may be performed.

The contractor will not perform any excavation work during this project, but will work closely with DC Water to report all cases found.

We do not have a schedule for each individual premise. Work will be managed geographically by ANC. We can provide a three month look ahead regarding which ANCs we will be working in. We are beginning the project in Wards 1 and 4.

There is no “opt out” option within the program.  The meters and transmitting devices belong to DC Water and we appreciate your support for the rehabilitation  of our Automated Reading (AMR) System.

The MTUs are in a watertight enclosure and the batteries cannot be replaced. And at this point, both the meters and the MTUs have passed their useful life. The new meters are more advanced and the MTU technology enables more services especially with regard to diagnosing issues.

Yes. Per Contract the maximum shutdown is 10 minutes for <1" meters and 30 minutes for the larger 1.5" & 2" meters.

If the meter servicing your property is located inside, you can simply contact a plumber and request for your service line to be upgraded to accommodate a larger meter size.  Conversely, if the meter is located outside, you will need to contact DC Water’s Permit Operations Department at (202) 646-8600 for information on how to proceed with your request. Please note a larger meter will increase the monthly water bill through the meter fee and the Water System Replacement Fee. You can calculate that here:

There are no eligibility requirements. Water meters are the property of DC Water.  If the meter servicing your property is scheduled for replacement, we ask that you grant access to the contractor.
