DC Water, EPA, Congresswoman Norton and others celebrate launch of wastewater to energy project - a technology first in North America;
DC Water, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Congresswoman Norton, the District Department of Energy and the Environment and others will commission and dedicate the newly constructed facilities that encompass several acres of the worlds largest advanced wastewater treatment plant. This is the first thermal hydrolysis installation in North America and the largest in the world.
This project generates 10 megawatts net electricity and powers about a third of the plants electrical needs. It also produces Class A biosolids that can be composted for use in garden and landscaping projects.
Visuals include massive facilities that include thermal hydrolysis vessels and four concrete digesters, along with various supporting facilities and structures. The ceremony will include a dedication and ceremonial planting of a tree. Posters explaining the processes will be included.
