DCWASA Encourages Residents & Businesses to Clear Snow Around Catch Basins

February 18, 2003

(Washington) As recovery efforts continue after record snowfall in the District of Columbia, the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DCWASA) strongly urges residents and businesses to keep areas clear of snow in front of storm drains and catch basins located along District streets. When shoveling or blowing snow from sidewalks and driveways, do not pile snow near street curbs that can cover the catch basins or obstruct flow into them. It is critically important to keep these areas clear so when the snow melts or if a heavy rainfall occurs, storm drains and basins are clear for water to enter them. Other factors to consider:

Snow & Catch Basins
· If you live in or know of an area prone to pooling of water or flash flooding, please make particular efforts to assure that catch basins and storm drain inlets are clear of snow, or call DCWASA (202-612-3400) to report these areas. Catch basins in low-lying areas and on corners in street intersections are of particular concern.

· Move vehicles from in front of storm drains or catch basins to create a clear path for melting snow and/or rainfall and to facilitate maintenance activities.

Snow & Fire Hydrants
· If you are able, please clear snow from fire hydrants covered with snow to preserve public safety and assist our fire fighters.
· If you observe a leaking hydrant, call DCWASA at (202) 612-3400 and report the location.

DCWASA field crews have been mobilized to address critical maintenance activities related to the water and sewer systems serving the District, and DCWASA employees are continuing to assist the District government with snow removal activities.
