Update on 14th Street, NW Lane Closure

July 10, 2014

Upon extensive investigation of the sinkhole on 14th Street NW, between Constitution Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue, DC Water has determined that the water and sewer infrastructure did not cause the damage to the roadway.

DC Water initially believed a 51-inch sewer could have been the cause of the damage. However, after excavating a large section of the roadway, the Authority determined the sewer pipe in this section of 14th Street NW is in proper working condition. There is no DC Water infrastructure located directly beneath the sinkhole.

DC Water will restore the work area which is expected to be completed by tomorrow evening. The current road closure in two northbound lanes of 14th Street NW and all necessary traffic control measures will remain in place until the work is complete.
