Actualización de información sobre las tuberías de plomo

El agua tratada por el acueducto de Washington que se distribuye a los propietarios en el Distrito de Columbia cumple con todos los requisitos establecidos por la Agencia de Protección Ambiental (EPA) bajo la Ley de Agua Potable Segura (SDWA). Esta agua contiene niveles extremadamente bajos de plomo (menos de dos partes por cada mil millon).

La EPA exige que todas las compañías que proveen servicios de agua, incluso WASA (la Autoridad de Acueductos y Alcantarillados del Distrito de Columbia), realicen muestras y pruebas para averiguar si existen concentraciones de plomo o cobre en los hogares de los clientes. Los que participan en el programa de muestras son voluntarios en cuyas residencias vive una sola familia. Además es necesario que dichas residencias adquieran su agua mediante tuberías de plomo, internas o externas, o mediante las de cobre con una soldadura de plomo, las que fueron prohibidas en 1986.

Junto con estas muestras, WASA ha llevado a cabo pruebas más integrales. Durante los últimos meses, estas muestras y pruebas han indicado que algunos, pero no todos, de los hogares con tuberías de plomo podrían contener concentraciones de plomo más altas que lo normal. Según nuestros datos, aproximadamente 23.000 hogares (cerca de 15% de nuestros clientes) usan agua que pasa por las tuberías de plomo. Es poco probable que se habría instalado estos tipos de tuberías en las instalaciones más grandes que las de una sola familia (por ejemplo, las escuelas o los edificios públicos), dado que eran distintas las materiales de construcción.

Conforme a la ley federal, WASA informa a los residentes de que pueden experimentar un incremento en los niveles de plomo en su agua potable cuando sea necesario. WASA seguirá haciendo esfuerzos especiales para satisfacer las necesidades de las personas que obtienen su agua mediante tuberías de plomo.

WASA insta a los clientes a que llamen a la línea telefónica (202) 787-2732 o que manden un correo eléctronico a WQP2003@dcwasa.com si tengan preguntas o quieran saber si existen tuberías de plomo en sus hogares. WASA proporcionará un kit de prueva de agua bajo requerimiento del cliente, si tenemos conocimiento de que su red de servicio pública o parte de ella es de plomo. WASA enviará este test al cliente en dos días, sin cargos por su recolección posterior al igual que los resultatos del mismo, dentro del los siguientes 30 días.
